connie + carter | St. Peter’s episcopal church + rittenhouse square + franklin institute

It’s funny, and actually rather freeing, when you find out you’ve been sized up by a potential client without even realizing it. Connie and Carter were guests at Anna and Sean’s wedding last May. Soon after I posted the pictures from that wedding, I met with Connie and Carter who were in the planning stages of their own wedding. It’s the best way to build a relationship not just when a client can recommend my services to a friend or colleague but when the couple gets the chance to view me working without me knowing I’m being studied. It’s sort of like a mystery shopper or like hiding behind a mirror. I’m just me, doing my thing, and they’re carefully observing and deciding if I’m the kind of guy they want for their wedding. From a business point of view, it’s awesome because if they’re contacting me it’s really just about details at that point. The conversations are always great because it’s like we already know each other.

And so here we are, Center City all the way. From big ol’ Ben Franklin at the Franklin Institute to Rittenhouse Square to the Phanatic. I have to  say that Carter sets the bar high for all grooms. This guy was not just enthusiastic about getting married to Connie, as you can see Carter has plenty of reason to be happy cause Connie’s not just gorgeous with style for days but she’s so easy going and fun to be around. But Carter is all class, calm in the face of chaos (he ran back to their home in the middle of the reception to get the sparklers they’d planned on using for their exit but to no avail, missing sparklers) gracious and not shy about showing appreciation. Yes, he says Thank You and you know he means it whether it’s in numerous emails to me before the wedding or getting on the mic at the end of the evening and publicly thanking the band  for making their evening fun and special. These two define class and I’m honored to have been a part of their day.

Now, to add a rather personal element of kismet here’s some common details between my wedding to my wonderful wife Caroline in 2006. Our anniversary is June 4 and this wedding was May 29, within a week. My wife’s dress was by Amsale, Connie too. My wife’s bouquet, pink peonies, guess what… My wife, gorgeous and stylish, and Connie, well see above and below. Ok, so we didn’t go to France and Italy for our honeymoon, we went to Turkey, but still.

Time to get outta the way and let the pictures do the talking.

Both Connie and I are shouting ‘Yaaaaaaaayyyyy’ because we’re so excited to see them. You do an incredible job and these pictures are just evidence of that.  Thank you again – truly!

This pair below is actually two images paired together. Normally I’d put a space in between, like the pair several images down, but I really liked the trick of perspective that happens when they are blended together like this.

So my Photojournalism past would say that this next sequence needs to be edited tightly but my wedding brain says they’re all different and deserve a place in their own right. The first is the classic picture on Broad Street that is pretty ubiquitous and not quite a must-have but if you’re doing the deed in Center City it ends up high on the list for many people. The next two pics are more of my sweet spot. They’re spontaneous moments, beautiful in their composition and energy, in this case two very different energies. The third is just fun, a spontaneous moment on the street from a passerby who must’ve been from out of town because if he’d stood there a few more minutes he probably would’ve run into another couple on the street.

image of the week | breaking tradition on broad street

Ok, Image of the Week is back, baby! I’ve been deep in album production for clients from the past two years and was reminded of this image, one of my favorites from last year. I work for you, my client. To not just fulfill your expectations and satisfy preconceived ideas about your wedding photography and what you expect to see but I also work for me, always working for something more. Getting beyond the known or expected is one of the truly satisfying parts of being a professional artist. If you’re a wedding photographer in Philly, even for just a minute, you’ll likely take the classic picture of a couple on Broad Street in from of City Hall. It can be a fun and Phillycentric way to celebrate your wedding. Passing motorists honk, this past Sat. a pedestrian, looking like he just left the gym, had to snap the couple with his iPhone. On this particular June evening, it was raining softly. Just enough to get the streets a bit wet but not enough to ruin the evening. So Kathy, John and I ran out to get our requisite images of them on the median. Then while running back in as the rain picked up, I kept shooting, as one must always do, and grabbed this impressionistic take on the scene. It’s one of the wondrous surprises that gets discovered after the shoot, sitting at the editing station. I love the blur, the colors, the contrast of Kathy’s dress against the street, the oncoming bus. If you love it too, let me know. Call me and I’ll break the mold for your wedding!image of the week | breaking tradition on broad street images of the week philadelphia wedding photography broad street city hall 900x600

MELANIE + CHRIS | PHILADELPHIA WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY – Glasbern inn

Melanie and Chris had a laid back afternoon at the lovely Glasbern Inn up in Fogelsville. The Inn is a quaint venue, they’re an all organic farm as well as being host to the best light in a bridal suite anywhere in the U.S. The light in their Garden Cottage is amazing, I’ve been here for three weddings and had the pleasure of working in the Garden Cottage twice and if I could I’d only ever work with this kind of light which can be seen in pictures three and four below. Melanie and Chris did away with many of the wedding traditions we’re used to seeing – no cake cutting, no first dance. Like I tell all who ask, a wedding should really reflect you and your personality so that your guests walk away feeling like they were at an event that really spoke to you as a couple. This event was more like a backyard picnic in all the ways that we all love them. It was comfortable, relaxed, friendly and warm, just like spending time with old friends and family.

Melanie and Chris are still on their honeymoon in Italy through this weekend so I hope they are stuffed full of pasta and Barolo by now!

Blog Feature | PHOTOGRAPHUY.COM

I’m happy to share that another of my images has been featured on the wedding photography blog, PHOTOGRAPHUY. The site is a wedding photographer curated website. The site gives a photographer’s take on other photographer’s work. The picture that Karen Evans chose was taken in the Fall of 2008. It’s interesting to see what others will respond to in my work. I’m always flattered and a bit surprised. It’s good to be surprised when people chose images of yours that you may have overlooked or not thought was that special. Heather is such a distinctive woman that other clients of mine who’ve seen the pictures, commented how they’d see her and sometimes her and Ben around their neighborhood of Old City when they lived here in Philly. I’m looking forward to photographing Heather’s sister’s wedding next Feb. in New York City. Christ Church Philadelphia wedding photography

JESSE + CHRIS | WATERWORKS

Cool Cool Cool. That’s about how I’d sum up these two Center City Cats. Jesse and Chris had a small backyard wedding a year or so ago at Jesse’s parent’s house in the DC area. I wasn’t a part of that celebration but when they wanted to mark their marriage with a celebration here in Philly, I got the chance to join them and their family and the always refined Waterworks. Even though it was just a group of family and friends for brunch on a Sunday afternoon, they still wanted to mark the day with a set of killer pictures capturing all the fun. Jesse did all the details herself and with some help from her sister.

“aah!! These look great!!!”

Kim + Larry | Old St. Joseph’s Church and Cescaphe Atrium

The general guideline of wedding planning says get all your ducks in a row 6-12 months before the wedding day. Often I’ll have clients pop up within three months of their wedding, actually I have quite a few. No biggie, if I’m not booked, I’m gonna work with you to make it happen. Larry and Kim though have set a time frame that’ll probably never be beaten. About three weeks before their wedding, Larry calls in a semi-panic looking for a photographer for his March 6 wedding to Kim. A photographer friend of his was going to shoot the wedding but the guy was injured and couldn’t shoot the wedding. Luckily enough, I wasn’t booked and was happy to step in. But I was about to learn that this was going to be a bit different. Larry is a commercial videographer and had started his career as a broadcast photojournalist so he had some pretty refined expectations for pictures. Sometimes working for other photographers can stress people out but working with Larry and Kim was just simply awesome.

“YOU DID IT!  Unreal Scott, so so good, I knew I had found the best and these photo’s are proof.

You captured the energy and emotion of the day artfully, so perfect…

Bravo Scott, Bravo!”

– Larry

Ok. So let’s talk about this last picture. Yes, it’s blurry. No, that’s not a problem or an accident. Blur is one of those devices that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. For some people it never works and for others it works too much. I fall somewhere inbetween. To me, it works when it works and that’s not all the time. I like blur as a way to break from the literal feel of documenting a straight moment. I like it when the blur of the image adds to or reinforces the feel and content of the image. If it distracts then that’s a problem. In this case, I really like it. I think the blur captures/reinforces the energy of the moment and you can still clearly connect with how Kim feels. To me it’s a way to express uncontained excitement and joy. I always consider blur as one of the tricks in my bag but don’t always use it unless I feel that it’s appropriate. In this case, I knew Larry and Kim were fans of my use of blur so I was sure to bring it out for their wedding. It’s also evident, but much less so, in the image above from their first dance.

When it’s not about the Bride

One of the best ways to judge a person’s character is to look around and see how others feel about them. Kali surrounded herself at the Bellevue Park Hyatt in downtown Philly with many friends and family as she got ready for her wedding to Vince in 2008. Kali and Vince are a comfortable couple to be around and it showed in the reaction of their friends to their wedding day. I really dig this picture because of all the difference faces telling the same story as they react to Kali in her dress. Each bridesmaid is looking at a different part of Kali and their reactions are just as varied. It’s a subtle image and doesn’t smack you over the head but rather it lingers and builds with significance the longer you spend time with it. So sit back and enjoy! When its not about the Bride images of the week ALE 101108 0424 Version 2

Janine celebrates wedding

Janine is one of those brides that really really makes me enjoy being a wedding photographer. Janine and Scott and I first met when my wife Caroline and I had literally just moved to Philly. Janine and Scott weren’t shy about letting me know what was important to them in their photography Collection. We talked a lot and they were clear and focused on what they wanted and didn’t want and we found a scenario that worked great for them and me. It’s my belief that the more I get to talk with clients in the early part of the relationship when we’re hammering out details and budget the easier and smoother the process is from start to finish. They know they’re getting an open forum to air their hopes and dreams for their photography and I get a chance to know them and am able to cater my coverage and Collection details to them.  Janine and Scott asked lots of questions and never hesitated to call with thoughts and ideas as the day approached.

Once the day got here, all of that dialogue came back to help us out when navigating the major force of change on the day, Hurricane Hanna moved through town with high winds and tons of rain. The alarms were going off in the hotel so we had to move the finalizing of getting ready over to the Knowlton Mansion in Northeast Philly. The rain put an end to their hopes of an outdoor, garden style wedding to the indoor location. One of the best pieces of advice when it comes to the day of the wedding is to sit back and relax because no matter what happens on this day, you are still married at the end. I like to say that anything that happens on your wedding day is good luck. And without missing a beat, Janine and Scott moved forward with their day that was capped off with an awesome night of dancing, tons of smiling and everyone was basking in the blow of Scott and Janine’s quite obvious joy and love for each other.

It’s not hard, I think, to just love this picture for it’s simple elements of Janine surrounded by Scott and her friends in an abundant moment of joy and exhilaration. The lighting, the kind I bring with me to every wedding, focuses your attention on Janine without overpowering or changing the feel of the room. I want my light to accentuate the mood of the event, not overwhelm or change the feel of the day. It takes extra special care and craft to make sure this is done well but to me it’s worth the effort to set up multiple lights to get a bold and exciting look to the images that one on-camera strobe gives.

Little church, big moment

Little church, big moment images of the week CN 07

One of the standard pieces of photographing a wedding is getting an overall scene setter of any important place. It’s not a priority for everyone but when it is, I work to make sure to make it is the best it can be. I could have easily just grabbed an image of the building and moved on. But when Christine, her bridesmaids and her father, were waiting outside the little Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick, NJ, I saw an opportunity to at least put some scale into the image and show them on this day, at that place. A pretty simple approach. Being ready for unexpected moments is part of the DNA of a good storytelling photographer. There’s no way to entirely predict every possible moment but you can put yourself in a place to be ready when and if the unexpected pops up. So you wait. You get into position and wait. And sometimes keep waiting. There was no way to know that the high-five was coming but once it did this went from a simple document of a place to an image that is raised to the level of truly special and storytelling. It’s that fine sliver of what makes the difference between a nice image and an image with a spark that continues to be satisfying over time. The high-five was, as it turns out, a classic part of their father–daughter relationship and it carried right on through to the wedding day. They even high-fived after the ceremony as Christine and Nick made their way down the aisle.

It’s these kinds of slivers of moments that makes being a documentary style photographer fun and exciting. You never know when you’re going to be given a gift like this. The spark of this moment continues to stand out not just in my memory of making it but also continues to make me smile, several years later.
